LAC LAVERNE THOMAS ADAM SHEARER NOSE ARTIST OF THE JOLLY GREEN GIANT

Born in Kitchener, Ontario, on the 7th July 1923, Laverne Shearer was employed as an Auto Mechanic before enlisting in the RCAF in 1941. He lived a remarkable life before passing away peacefully at a veteran’s hospital on 24th April 1969.

LAC Laverne Thomas Adam Shearer was posted to Leeming, Yorkshire’s 408 [Goose] Squadron in March 1943, as a class “A” Air Engine Mechanic where he doubled as a visionary nose art designer. The above Lancaster Mk. II, Serial DS692, EQ-S, came to Goose squadron on 7th October 1943, and flew 49 operations, half of which were flown by Pilot, Officer John Douglas Harvey, DFC. P/O. Harvey was truly a survivor, making eleven successful bombing runs on Germany’s capital city. His infamous Lancaster carried Laverne’s nose art, an imposing Jolly Green Giant holding a 500lb bomb and wearing a flask of liquor around his burly neck.
