MATTHEW CECIL FERGUSON NOSE ARTIST OF THE GALLOPIN' GERTY
Mat was originally born in England, before immigrating to Canada with his parents. Ferguson grew up in Calgary, Alberta where he worked as an Aero-frame mechanic and later, one of Canada’s most famous WWII nose artists.
He painted seven Halifax aircraft with impressive nose art designs, the most well known being MZ802. “Gallopin’ Gerty”, which featured a pink elephant carrying a bomb in her trunk. The original "Gallopin' Gerty" was carried by Halifax MZ-802 (QB-G) of 424 Squadron RCAF. "Gerty" served well, however, on 9/10 October, 1944, the aircraft failed to return from a raid in Bochum. The squadron's commanding officer, W/C G.A.Roy DFC, was the pilot. Roy and five of the six other aircrew aboard survived, although they were later detained as Prisoners of War.
